Downlights
What are Commercial Downlights?
Downlights are ideal for overhead lighting in various commercial applications. We offer various downlights that you can place in retrofit housing or new installations. These recessed downlight fixtures are well-suited for multiple locations, specifically:
- Offices
- Schools
- Commercial kitchens
- Retail stores
- Hospitals and clinics
- Art galleries
Most of our products are IC-rated, meaning they are built to be installed next to insulation without the risk of catching fire. If you will be installing the fixture next to the insulation, verify that it is IC-rated.
Types of Downlights

Built-In Junction Box
Downlights with a built-in junction box are ideal for new construction. The boxes encase all of the wiring needed for the installation. You can use this downlight to replace the existing housing or install it in new construction or remodels.

Can Light Retrofit
Can light retrofits install directly into existing housing to replace outdated fixtures. Retrofitting is a cheaper and easier solution than completely replacing the fixture.

Canless Downlight
Canless downlights have a slimmer profile than traditional recessed can lights, making them best suited for ceilings with low clearance. Canless downlights come with an independent junction box for installation. They can be installed in new construction or retrofitted into existing canless housing.

Commercial Downlight
Commercial downlights can be used for new construction or retrofit applications. They typically have wide beam angles for maximum light coverage and a reflector trim for maximum light output. These lights have a higher lumen output, ideal for hospitals and medical centers. Commercial downlights typically have a deeper recess to eliminate glare and reduce eyestrain for workplaces and schools.

Smart Downlights
We offer certain downlights compatible with smart controls. These smart controls allow connection to various hubs, such as Amazon, Google, Apple, and SmartThings compatible products, and can be controlled via smartphone. You can perform various tasks, including powering multiple light fixtures simultaneously from your phone, changing the CCT or color, and dimming the light output. You can easily integrate our Matter-certified fixtures into existing smart home ecosystems, meaning you can continually add new fixtures to your hub as long as they are Matter-certified.
Types of Trim

Smooth
Smooth trims have a clean, even surface. This design is perfect for those wanting a more modern, less obtrusive look.

Reflector
The reflector trim uses the polished interior to create a brighter light and reduce glare while covering a broader area. It is well-suited for areas with higher ceilings.

Gimbal
With gimbal trim, you can adjust the light fixture to direct the light in various directions. Most gimbal trims can rotate at a 360° angle and usually tilt 30-45° to each side. You can install these in retail environments for accent lighting or task lighting in kitchens.

Baffle
Baffle trim has ridges lining the inside to diffuse extra light and minimize glare. This trim creates a diffused light. Use it as overhead lighting if you want a relaxed environment.

Flush
The flush trims have a slimmer profile for narrow ceiling cavities. Their simple exterior allows them to blend in for a simplistic and modern look. You might prefer this trim if you’re installing into drop ceilings, thin plasterboards, vaulted ceilings, or tight spaces in the joist cavity.
Installation
Most downlights are easy to install. However, your installation process will differ depending on the exact type of fixture you are installing. We recommend referring to the owner’s manual for the specific product you’re installing. The process will also vary depending on whether the light is being retrofitted into existing housing or installed into new construction.
What Do I Need to Know About LED Commercial Downlights?
Correlated Color Temperature
Our downlights come in a wide range of CCTs. A cooler CCT is usually used in office spaces or kitchens to enhance focus and productivity. A warmer CCT creates a more relaxed environment, which you might prefer for a restaurant. Selectable CCT options are available for certain fixtures.
Energy-Efficiency
Commercial downlights use less energy and release less heat than incandescent or halogen bulbs. Energy efficiency also leads to saving money on your electricity bill. Additionally, LEDs have long life spans since they operate using little energy. You won’t have to worry about replacing them nearly as much, leading to additional savings in replacement costs.
Improved Light Quality
Commercial downlights provide great light quality. Most of our LED commercial downlights have a 90+ CRI. This is an excellent Color Rendering Index rating, meaning the LED accurately depicts color as it would appear in sunlight.
Design
Since we offer various fixture and trim types, you can choose from multiple designs to fit your preferences. Certain fixtures, such as commercial retrofit fixtures, look like traditional downlights. However, flush trim or canless fixtures will provide a more modern design.
Dimmability
You can dim the downlights if you don’t want to have your space brightly lit. For example, if you are trying to create a warm environment in a setting like a restaurant or theater, you might want to get a compatible dimmer to decrease the brightness. Besides using a smart controller, we usually offer two dimming types for commercial downlights: a 0-10V controller or a TRIAC dimmer.
