LED Color

Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) can be defined as the color of white light a light source is emitting. CCT is measured in Kelvin (K). The different color temperatures along the Kelvin scale correlate with different shades of white light, all of which impact how an individual perceives the space. LED lights are typically grouped into 3 different color temperatures: warm white, natural white, and cool white. Warm white gives off a yellow shade of light, natural light closely resembles the color of light given off from the sun, and cool light has a slightly blue tint to it.

In some instances, LED lights can be tunable white or selectable white. Selectable white allows you to select between multiple different color temperatures, and choose one at the time of installation. Tunable white allows you to control the LED light with a controller and fine tune it to whatever color temperature you would like without the need to only choose between a few set options.

LED lights may come in different colors such as red, green, blue, and more. When a bulb comes in a color other than a shade of white, it does not have a CCT value and is instead represented by the color it emits. LED bulbs can be purchased as single colors, or they can be purchased as RGB, which allows the light to change color, giving multiple color options in one.

There are LED lights that also come with combinations of white and colors. These are often referred to as RGB+Warm White, RGB+Natural White, RGB+Cool White, and RGB+Tunable White. These provide the option of colored and white lights all in one. These types of lights are simply controlled by a remote or a smartphone application.

Environmental Rating

Suitable for Dry Locations

This marking indicates that you can use the light or component in a location not normally subject to dampness. This may include locations exposed to temporary dampness, such as a building under construction, provided that ventilation is adequate to prevent moisture accumulation. Use these fixtures in living rooms, bedrooms, offices, hallways, and similar areas. The marking may be "SUITABLE FOR DAMP LOCATIONS" or "DRY LOCATIONS ONLY."

Suitable for Damp Locations

Fixtures marked “SUITABLE FOR DAMP LOCATIONS” or “SUITABLE FOR WET LOCATIONS” can be installed in damp locations. A damp location is an exterior or interior location regularly or occasionally subject to moisture condensation on or around electrical equipment. It includes partially protected places such as covered patios and porches. Damp locations include any regularly muggy or humid area, such as above a kitchen sink or stove, and appropriately vented bathrooms near the tub or shower.

Suitable for Wet Locations

Fixtures and components marked "SUITABLE FOR WET LOCATIONS" can be installed in wet or damp locations. A wet location is anywhere water or other liquids may drip, splash, or flow on or against electrical equipment. A light marked "SUITABLE FOR WET LOCATIONS" may have additional markings that tell where and at what height it can be safely mounted. Uncovered outdoor areas like decks, gazebos, walls, and typical landscape lighting sites all fall under the heading of wet locations.

Standards And Certifications

Standards and certifications play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, performance, and compliance of LED lighting products, helping consumers and businesses make informed decisions about their use in various applications.

UL (Underwriters Laboratories)

UL certification signifies that a product has been tested and meets stringent safety standards set by Underwriters Laboratories. It is one of the most recognized safety standards for electrical and electronic products in the United States.

ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratories)

ETL certification indicates that a product has been tested by Intertek and found to meet the minimum requirements of prescribed safety standards. Products with the ETL mark comply with North American safety standards and can be sold in the United States and Canada.

DLC (DesignLights Consortium)

DLC certification is focused on the quality and performance of energy-efficient lighting products. Products with DLC certification are recognized for their efficacy, quality, and energy savings, making them eligible for rebates and incentives.

UL IoT Security

UL IoT Security certification evaluates the cybersecurity aspects of connected devices. Products with this certification meet UL's requirements for IoT security, ensuring robust protection against cyber threats and vulnerabilities.

California Title 24

California Title 24 is a building energy efficiency standard that mandates certain energy-saving measures, including lighting requirements.

NSF (National Sanitation Foundation)

NSF certification ensures that products meet strict public health and safety standards, particularly for food, water, and consumer goods. For LED lighting, it often applies to products used in food service or healthcare environments.

FCC (Federal Communications Commission)

FCC certification confirms that a product meets the electromagnetic interference and radiation standards set by the Federal Communications Commission. This ensures that the product will not interfere with other electronic devices and communication networks.

Energy Star

Energy Star certification is awarded to products that meet stringent energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Matter

Matter is a connectivity standard for smart home devices, ensuring interoperability and reliability across different brands and platforms.

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)

RoHS compliance ensures that products do not contain specific hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, in amounts exceeding the established limits.
