Dark Sky Friendly
Our line of Dark Sky friendly luminaires provide directed lighting while minimizing light pollution. These fixtures may include dimming or selectable wattage and accessories like shields to minimize overlighting and restrict backlight, glare, and uplight. They also have an output option down to 3000K or lower to reduce blue light wavelengths in nighttime environments. Depending on local requirements, some of these fixtures may also be turtle-friendly for marine ecosystems or other sensitive areas.

BUG Rating
BUG Rating
BUG is an acronym that stands for Backlight, Uplight, and Glare. The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and the International Dark Sky Association developed the BUG rating system to describe the unwanted light emitted from an outdoor light fixture. BUG ratings only apply to luminaires mounted in their normal downward position. Backlight is all light emitted from the fixture back toward the mounting pole from 0° to 90° vertically and 90° to -90° horizontally. Uplight is all light radiated from a fixture above 90° vertically. It essentially lights the sky, wasting energy and contributing to skyglow light pollution. "Front Light" or Glare is all light distributed from the front of a fixture from 0° to 90° vertically and -90° to 90° horizontally. An example BUG rating of "B4-U0-G4" has a Backlight rating of 4, an Uplight rating of 0, and a Glare rating of 4, with the scale going from 0 (best) to 5 (worst). For more information, see our knowledge base article "BUG Ratings and Light Pollution." |

Certifications/Compliance
Certifications/Compliance
Standards and certifications comprise a vast number of companies and compliances that serve specific purposes—primarily addressing safety, environmental impact and energy efficiency, and sanitation. They are divided into categories for each product type and certification type to allow for very specific qualifications related to each product. When this system is being used as intended, it gives consumers, installers, suppliers, and anyone else that may be involved confidence that the product is safe and will work well in their application. The most common UL and ETL certifications relate to safety and installation, although they do also provide some sanitation-related certifications (using NSF standards). Another common certification body is the DLC, which specializes in certifying the performance of a light—mainly related to environmental impact and electrical efficiency. Learn more about different certification types here . |

Current Draw
Current Draw
Current draw is calculated using the following formula: W/V = A, where W = the amount of power your light needs (wattage), V is the electrical system voltage (e.g., 120V AC), and A = amps. An ampere or amp (A) is the standard unit for electrical current. A milliamp (mA) equals one-thousandth of an amp, or 1000 mA is equivalent to 1 A.
Choosing LED fixtures with the correct amperage ensures safe and proper operation, preventing damage or injury. We recommend having all electrical components and fixtures installed by a certified professional electrician or lighting technician in compliance with all relevant standards and regulations. |

Suitable for Dry Locations This marking indicates that you can use the light or component in a location not normally subject to dampness. This may include locations exposed to temporary dampness, such as a building under construction, provided that ventilation is adequate to prevent moisture accumulation. Use these fixtures in living rooms, bedrooms, offices, hallways, and similar areas. The marking may be "SUITABLE FOR DAMP LOCATIONS" or "DRY LOCATIONS ONLY."Suitable for Damp Locations Fixtures marked “SUITABLE FOR DAMP LOCATIONS” or “SUITABLE FOR WET LOCATIONS” can be installed in damp locations. A damp location is an exterior or interior location regularly or occasionally subject to moisture condensation on or around electrical equipment. It includes partially protected places such as covered patios and porches. Damp locations include any regularly muggy or humid area, such as above a kitchen sink or stove, and appropriately vented bathrooms near the tub or shower.Suitable for Wet Locations Fixtures and components marked "SUITABLE FOR WET LOCATIONS" can be installed in wet or damp locations. A wet location is anywhere water or other liquids may drip, splash, or flow on or against electrical equipment. A light marked "SUITABLE FOR WET LOCATIONS" may have additional markings that tell where and at what height it can be safely mounted. Uncovered outdoor areas like decks, gazebos, walls, and typical landscape lighting sites all fall under the heading of wet locations. |

Photocell
Photocell
What is a Photocell and How Does It Work? When an LED light is equipped with a photocell, the light will turn on and off automatically based on the available ambient light. Their unique functionality makes them ideal for outdoor area lighting specifically.Photocells are variable resistors that change the resistance in an electrical circuit depending on the amount of light present where they are mounted. Because of this, they must be mounted in exposed areas where they receive adequate light to function. Photocells, or photocontrols, come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be integrated into a luminaire or be an added accessory depending on the light. Can a Photocell Be Bypassed? Some lights allow for a photocell to be bypassed as needed. When the photocell is bypassed, it allows for the luminaire to remain on constantly or be controlled by an existing switch or timer. Depending on the type of photocell and how it is installed in the fixture, it may be bypassable using a shorting cap, a slide or DIP switch, or by unplugging the photocell. Consult the user’s manual of the light to confirm which option(s) may be applicable and how to implement them safely. Always use caution and turn off supply power before working on wiring of any type.Shorting Cap Photocells on many commercial applications like parking lot and area lighting applications are mounted externally with a twist-lock socket or adapter. Swapping this for a shorting cap simply closes the circuit on your LED light fixture, which keeps your light in an always-on state. This allows it to be controlled externally as well if a central photocell or switch system is being utilized.DIP Switch or Slide Switch While DIP switches and standard slide switches function differently in most cases, when integrated into the photocontrol system of a light they perform the same function. Switches like these are common on canopy and dusk-to-dawn barn lights. These types of switches allow you to toggle the photocell sensor on or off to fit your needs without any rewiring or replacing parts.Disconnect the Wiring Some photocell designs, such as those commonly found in wall packs, allow the operator to simply unplug the photocell to allow the light to work in an always-on state or be controlled by an external switch. |

Turtle Friendly
Turtle Friendly
![]()
Turtle-friendly lighting is designed to drastically reduce the disorientating effects of artificial light pollution on the nesting instincts of turtles and other coastal wildlife. Fixtures that are designed to be turtle-friendly will have an ultra-warm or amber color temperature with a wavelength longer than 560 nanometers. They are full cutoff fixtures where most of the light is directed downward, minimizing the effect on the beach or night sky.
Use turtle-friendly lights in beachfront and coastal locations to ensure they remain dark enough for wildlife navigation while still offering adequate lighting for people. Learn more about the importance of Turtle-Friendly lighting in our Knowledge Base blog. |
